Home Away From The Commons

::thunk thunk thunk:: Hello? Is this thing on? Ahem… Testing 1, 2, 3. Testing, 1, 2—Oh! Hi there! Sorry, I didn't realize anyone else was here. Welcome! Come in, come in!

You may know me, or maybe not. Probably not. I'm just a person in the big, wide world. Not a celebrity or a professor or nemesis or anything like that. I'm just a person. And this here—::waves hands about::—is my erstwhile blog. I had another one, back in the day, but it's defunct and long forgotten. That's all right. I mean, I wrote some interesting stuff, but none of it really mattered and it served its purpose at the time. Life goes on. I was on Posterous for a time, too, but then it closed up shop and so, well, I came back here. This place was, up until a very short while ago, just a placeholder for me. It linked to other things, other places where you could find me. Now, however, it is going to serve a more useful purpose: the one it was designed for, actually; i.e., blogging.

I plan to talk about things that interest me, life experiences, milestones, etc. Also, I'll probably write about music I enjoy and apps and whatnot. There will likely be philosophy. Certainly, there will be pictures. Mine, I'm thinking, but maybe others' pics as well.

What might you expect, then, from such posts? Why visit? Why bookmark this blog?

Well, I'd like to think that the promise of cookies was compelling, but I'm not going to give anyone cookies. Let's be real here, all right? What you'll get here is—I'd like to think—a smorgasbord of interesting things. You might bypass this or that entry, but with any luck there will be something on the menu to put on your plate and please your palate. At the very least, my writing should prove entertaining, or provocative, or thoughtful (maybe even, on occasion, insightful), and that's not something you would shake a stick at, right? Also, I am not averse to comments and the conversation born in ensuing responses. I love a good dialog is what I'm saying.

What you'll also get is the writing of a person who loves words and thoughts. Words and thoughts are, by and large, quite awesome, don't you think? I love a good turn of phrase, and I love how one may, in such a blog as this, finally capture and frame that l'esprit d'escalier that would otherwise get lost along the way. Hmm… oh! Yes. And also you'll get to see, and maybe know a little bit, this oddball character—me! I'm just a person, but I am my own person.

So, and just then, who am I? I mean, what are my particulars? (I am here imagining that you might ask such questions.) At the time of writing this, I am a 47 year old man. I have thinning hair, which I actually don't mind at all, and it is going silver. I am, statistically, really average all around, at least in the department of physical characteristics. Some have said I'm good looking, but who knows? My beautiful partner of over a decade thinks I'm the good kind of special, so I've got no complaints. Um, what else? Uh… Well, I'm working—on again, off again in actuality—on a novel with the working title of Tharia: Roads To Adventure. It's a fantasy novel, placed in a world I am creating. After years of playing World of Warcraft, and enjoying George R. R. Martin's offerings as well as Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, I realized that I had a very strong yearning to immerse myself in my own imaginings, just to see what was there. As it turns out, there's this world in there! I thought it might be interesting to write about it, and so I am. Um… There's also the little bio blurb up there… or over there… uh, you know, that "About Me" thing. Beyond that, well, I'm not sure there's much I could say.

Anyway, if you've read this far (this statement only applying if you actually did read this far), then again I say to you, Welcome! I hope you enjoy what I write. Don't be a stranger. Civility is supreme in defense of kindness, compassion, and love, and derives its power from them. Not all roads lead to Rome anymore. The future of humankind lies in space. And, uh, yes: Excelsior!

PS: As you may have noted in the above picture, on my left arm is a tattoo that says, "Per Aspera Ad Astra" (which is Latin, meaning: "Through difficulties/adversity to the stars") and on my right there are stars (a personal asterism, if you follow my context). That is what I embrace life with. Now, I think, you know enough about me for one post. Ciao!
